In our pope-free world, searching for piousness seems pretty pointless. But slacking on our Hail Marys doesn’t really compare to the depraved downfall of mega-devout man of the cloth, Ambrosio, in The Monk.

With a very-scary Vincent Cassel in the title role, Dominik Moll adapts the gothic novel for the screen without shorting on the spooky supernatural. The Monk opens Friday, March 8, at Harkins Shea 14.Wonder Women! @ Mesa Arts Center
Community Cinema presents a screening of Wonder Women, a documentary from PBS’ Independent Lens series. It explores how women’s liberation relates to pop culture portrayals of powerful women. Check it out at 6 p.m. at Mesa Arts Center Thursday, March 21. Admission is free.
Phoenix College Latino Film Festival @ Various Locations
In its 13th year, Phoenix College Latino Film Festival spans six days and includes films from Spain, Mexico, and Argentina. The fest opens on Thursday, March 21, at Bulpitt Auditorium with a screening of Flamenco, Flamenco at 7 p.m. Screenings continue through Thursday, March 28, at various locations. Admission is free.
Two Spirits @ Burton Barr Central Library
In conjunction with the exhibit “Out West,” Burton Barr Central Library will host a screening of the documentary Two Spirits, which looks at the life and death of Native American teen Fred Martinez. Senator Jack C. Johnson will introduce the film Thursday, March 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is free. Filmmaker Lydia Nibley will discuss the film once it’s finished.
The Unbelievers @ Gammage Auditorium
Kicking off Origin Stories weekend at ASU is a test screening of the documentary The Unbelievers, featuring Lawrence Krauss and Richard Dawkins. Catch the film at Gammage Auditorium on Friday, March 29, at 6 p.m. Audience members will be asked for feedback after the film. A panel featuring Ian McEwan, Lawrence Krauss, and Richard Dawkins will follow. Tickets are $16 to $26 and available through www.ticketmaster.com.
