A Taste of Melanin, the vibrant celebration of Black culture in Phoenix, is set to make its return for its second year in February. Hosted by The Zay Project, a local nonprofit organization committed to uplifting Black voices through art, culture and education, this monthlong series of free events promises to educate, inspire and immerse attendees in the richness of Black history and tradition.

Launched in 2024 by Michael Jackson, president of The Zay Project and founder of Mya Kai Creative Agency, last year’s A Taste of Melanin was a resounding success, drawing hundreds of people. Jackson expects an even larger turnout this year as the festival expands with new workshops, performances and interactive experiences. These include a group run at Tempe Town Lake, a silent disco at ASU Art Museum, hip-hop karaoke and workshops on wealth-building and mental health.

“Our goal is to showcase the rich history, art, music and traditions of Black culture and help people gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of its impact,” Jackson says. “The world is changing — the time is now. We must tackle these issues differently to make sure people understand how impactful Black culture and history is on everything and everyone.”

Among Jackson's favorite moments from last year was the festival's grand finale, an evening of live performances, storytelling and spoken word that left a lasting impression on attendees, he says. Another highlight was the silent disco, where people of all backgrounds came together on the dance floor to celebrate the evolution of Black music through curated playlists spanning jazz, funk and hip-hop.

“This year, we’re building on that momentum,” Jackson says. “We’re expanding our events, creating even more opportunities for engagement, and making sure that every person that participates leaves with a deeper connection to Black history and culture.”
