Director Petter Ringbom takes on the consequences of freedom of expression in Shield and Spear. Following Ringbom’s first feature-length documentary, The Russian Winter, Shield and Spear explores the cultural and artistic tensions in South Africa 20 years after the end of apartheid, the government’s race-based system of segregation. The film is made with the help of artist Brett Murray, photographer Zanele Muholi, design collective The Smarteez, and musicians Xander Ferreira, Yolanda Fyrus, Fokofpolisiekar, Siyabonga Mthembu, Mpumi Mcata, DJ Invizable, and Motèl Mar. Shield and Spear screens at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 5, at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at the front desk or by calling 480-874-4666.
