Research has linked video games to childhood violence, but let’s face facts: Long before kids were annihilating zombies with assault rifles, they were testing wrestling moves on their buddies and beating the crap out of the smelly kid. The only difference? Their combat arena was the playground, not the computer.
Schoolyard scrapes lead to a lifelong friendship in iTheatre Collaborative’s regional premiere of Gruesome Playground Injuries, on stage through Saturday, June 2, at Herberger Theater Center, 222 East Monroe Street. The show depicts the 30-year relationship of Doug and Kayleen, who first meet at their school nurse’s office following Doug’s attempt to play Evel Knievel on his bicycle.
The unlucky pair is brought together by physical and mental pain throughout the decades. “It’s a tragic love story,” says director Michael Traylor. “It’s about two people who are right for each other, and yet very wrong.”
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: May 18. Continues through June 2, 2012
