Weekly Freebie: Writing Workshop: Beyond the Self

Each week, Jackalope Ranch brings you a free event, workshop, or you-name-it happening in Phoenix. Because sometimes the best things in life really are free. This week's freebie: Writing Workshop: Beyond the Self.

"Know thy self."

Sure it's a good rule to live by, but what happens when you want to discuss something beyond the self -- or rather, someone? In this modern melting pot of gender, sex, race, and religion it helps to know how your words can best be heard, which is why Lawn Gnome Publishing is inviting writers, advertisers, poets, and songwriters to join them in a special one night-only writing workshop: Beyond the Self.

Happening tonight at Lawn Gnome Publishing, this free workshop lead by performance poet and gay rights activist Joy Young will cover the basics on writing about characters outside ourselves.

The event promises to discuss such subjects as: avoiding outdated and misused words, using inclusive language, delivering humor without offense, setting your own background aside, and writing about marginalized communities.

The workshop will run from 8 to 9 p.m. For more information or to RSVP visit the Lawn Gnome Publishing event on Facebook.
