Haunted House Review: Doomtown at Rawhide

By Martin Cizmar

Doomtown at Rawhide
Rawhide, The 10 at Wild Horse Pass
Chandler

The good: Great scene around the haunts themselves, awesome curtain maze, cool scenery in jungle room, good decoys paired with hidden scares throughout, great first scene in the asylum house.

The bad: Tons of wall thumping, annoying pissing skeleton, not enough actors

The ugly: Very, very short for $16.

I would never knowingly contradict a Best of Phoenix. Therefore, I am not prepared to say that Rawhide’s Doomtown is not The Best Halloween Scare in our fair metropolis. I will, however, say it’s not my favorite.

Flier of the Week: Stiletto Formal, Black Carl, William Fucking Reed

By Martin Cizmar As I mentioned earlier this week, The Stiletto Formal is having two CD Release parties for ¡Fiesta, Fiesta, Fiesta, Fiesta! this week. Saturday’s show at The Rogue also features Black Carl and Montresors, as well as DJ William Fucking Reed. It’s all promoted Psyko Steve, so sounds…

MC Chris and Totally Michael at The Clubhouse on Oct. 22

By Michael Lopez

Taking the stage in his Army of Darkness t-shirt accompanied by Zombie Nation’s hit “Kernkraft 400,” (as heard in many sports arenas) Illinois’ own MC Chris welcomed the flood of cheers from his loyal, nerdy fan base. Chris Ward IV knew just how to get them riled up for his entrance, showing his favorite clips from Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead 2 before he took the stage. I knew going into this concert I would encounter a lot of sci-fi themed fanboy antics, so having “Bruce Campbell” (the star of the Evil Dead series) act as the buffer between opener Totally Michael and MC Chris made all the sense in the world.

Border-Jumping with Roger Clyne

Weekends start early in Rocky Point. The sun hasn’t yet set on a Friday night, but the beach is already spattered with vomit. Most people entering the tony Peñasco Del Sol hotel, overlooking the beach, plop cans of cerveza down on the marble counter as they check in. Where they…

You Asked For It: Graceful Degradation

Graceful Degradation
There You Go
(Self-released)

By Martin Cizmar

As I wrote last week, every band selected for You Asked For It, no matter how bad, gets at least one spin when they go in the queue. Graceful Degradation got a lot more than that as I listened to their three-song EP, There You Go, at least ten times today. Honestly, I still can’t think of much to say about it.

CD Review: The Stiletto Formal

By Martin Cizmar

You know a local band is big when they get not one but two CD release parties. The Stiletto Formal will be all over town this weekend, celebrating the release of ¡Fiesta, Fiesta, Fiesta, Fiesta! at The Clubhouse on Friday and The Rogue on Saturday.

Haunted House Review: Fear Farm in Glendale

By Martin Cizmar

Fear Farm
99th Avenue and McDowell
Glendale

The good: Great bargain at $18, fantastic scenery, realistic props, skilled and aggressive monsters, lots of startles and scares.
The bad: Location, no animatronics at all, too much chainsaw.
The ugly: None. This is a pretty great haunted house.

Concert Review: Weezer at the Arizona State Fair on Oct. 18

By Martin Cizmar

OK, I admit it, I’ve been neglectful of my old friend Rivers Cuomo. I haven’t really paid much attention to Weezer since The Green Album and I haven’t seen him since 2002, when I went a couple shows to see The Strokes, who I was spending a lot of time with at the time, open for him. As far as I knew, though, Rivers was a little nutty, in a harmless sort of way, but seemed like a pretty cool dude. I wasn’t in touch much, but hearing the singles off the last three albums filter through the radio, it seemed like things were pretty normal. Rivers was doing his thing, I was doing mine, everything was cool. We weren’t close, like we had been back in my high school days, but I had no reason to suspect he’d fallen on hard times.

Flier of the Week: Sadisco*

By Martin Cizmar

Halloween creeps ever closer, and with it the concert posters get ever darker. Like this one for Sadisco* collective’s monthly party this Saturday.

Haunted House Review: Twisted Big Top in Glendale

By Martin Cizmar Twisted Big Top Westgate City Center Glendale First, some introduction: This is the first of a few haunted house reviews that Up On The Sun – your favorite Phoenix music, arts and culture blog – is going to have this month. Why? Well, first off, haunted houses…

You Asked For It: Space Tourists

By Martin Cizmar

Every Tuesday, we here at Up On The Sun do a little feature called You asked For It where we review local CDs. Here’s the thing with You Asked for It: If you ask for it, we give it to you. Pretty much every CD we get in here goes in the queue for review, thereby committing me to listening to it at least once all the way through.

Flier of the Week: Treble Hook Company

By Martin Cizmar There’s actually a lot of pretty decent fliers up right now, but Mesa’s Treble Hook Company really outdid itself with this dark beauty. The band, which plays grinding metal, will be at Hollywood Alley tomorrow ($5) and also has dates scheduled at Big Fish Pub and Club…

Cat Power’s Voice Shines, Even In The Dark

By Martin Cizmar

Depending on who you ask, Cat Power is either really good or really bad live. In her younger days, as a notoriously stage-frightened boozehound, Chan Marshall didn’t impress anyone. Now sober and enjoying life, the indie diva mostly gets great write-ups praising her energetic sets and mesmerizing stage presence.

You Asked For It: Mr. Meeble

For far too long, there were far too few bands interested in layering acoustic and electronic elements to make the sort of “chill” music that fills any respectable nightclub with pleather couches. Not anymore. Chill music is everywhere now, Phoenix and elsewhere, though not everyone is doing it as well as Kruder & Dorfmeister.
