Calabria Italian Grocer & Deli was one of the original occupants of the renovated, historic Gold Spot building at Roosevelt and 3rd Avenue, so it was gloomy news when the casual neighborhood eatery closed up shop last September. Daniel Wayne’s second location of Lola Coffee soon took its place — no complaints on that front — but it was still a bummer to see a reliable lunch spot close.
But change continues. Seven months later, Calabria is reborn as Calabria Italian Kitchen, with new digs at 2605 N. 7th St (northeast corner of 7th Street and Virginia).
The menu looks similar to the previous one: sandwiches like the Caprese (mozzarella, tomato, basil, red onions, olive oil), roast beef, chicken parmigiana, and the Sicilian (mortadella, sopressata, prosciutto) on sub rolls, a few salads like antipasto and tuna salad, and pasta dishes such as spaghetti or penne with sausage, gnocchi with meatball, lasagna, and pasta bolognese. Calabria also offers nightly specials.
