Tacos may very well be the perfect food, but let’s face it, the standard Meximerican fare can get a bit stale after a while. Taco the Town is here to highlight some of the more unusual Mexican finds.
This week we’re setting aside the carne and queso for something a little different:
¿Como se dice?: You simply can’t go wrong combining breakfast and dulce de leche. It’s milk-based after all. And churros are breakfast foods, right? So we were pretty excited when the vast powers of the internet delivered this gem: Cheerios were set to release a brand new Dulce de Leche flavor this month.
Finally, the caramel sweetness of cajeta for breakfast without the impending sugar coma and the nagging mom conscience of, “You can’t eat candy for breakfast!”
Forget about plain Cheerios, which are more fit for sticky toddler fingers, or the other dozen or so varieties concocted by the mad geniuses at General Mills. (Fruity Cheerios? PB Multigrain? Banana nut?) We only had eyes for Dulce de Leche Cheerios.
Then we tasted them.
(Read on for the sticky sweet verdict on Cheerios’ new flavor…)
Bring a bit of México to your kitchen: Pick up a box at the grocer and see if you’re more of a fan. We’re planning on turning our box of Dulce de Leche Cheerios into sticky sweet cereal bars using real deal cajeta. Try this recipe for Caramel Cheerios Bars, and just sub in 14 oz of homemade dulce de leche. It’s easy to make at home, just pop a couple holes in the top of sweetened condensed milk cans and simmer in a pot of water for 3-4 hours. Crock pots also work wonders for dulce de leche.
