Last year we marked the hundred day countdown to Best of Phoenix by sharing some of our favorite food folks’ “Personal Best” lists. This year we’re bringing back our list of 100 Favorite Dishes. 59. Chilaquiles from La Tolteca

Now we’re not saying La Tolteca has lasted in the Valley for over 50 years just because of their amazing chilaquiles, but they certainly keep us coming back to the downtown Phoenix spot time and time again for a spicy, hearty hangover cure.
With your choice of meat from carne asada to chicken or al pastor pork, picking which will top your tortilla strip based masterpiece is probably the hardest decision you’ll have to make at La Tolteca. Once you pick and fork over a little under $7, you’ll quickly be met with a plate of piping hot chips and strips, chile sauce, cheese, scrambled eggs, avocado, onion, cilantro, crema, queso fresco, and whichever meat you picked.
All of that goodness will certainly kill any bad feelings from the night before, but you’ll likely need a nap after visiting. Just make sure to get some fresh-baked pan dulce for later in the day too.
