Cookiez on Mill, one of Mill Avenue’s few remaining independently owned businesses, has shuttered.

The family-owned treat shop, which for years was the go-to place in Tempe to score one of the best ice cream sandwiches in the Valley (think: your choice of premium ice cream squished between two, made-from-scratch thin and chewy cookies like chocolate chip, oatmeal, and white chocolate macadamia nut made from the owner’s family recipes), also served Italian ice, lemonade, and even some soy-based snacks.

Despite the increasing number of ice cream and snack-related shops on Tempe’s main drag, Cookiez on Mill managed to weather the storm. That is, until last week, when the shop “abruptly closed,” according to an employee of a nearby business.
