What the heck is a turf accountant? I had to Google that one. The American Heritage Dictionary says it’s a British term for a bookmaker licensed to take bets on horses. Huh.
In downtown, though, Turf Accountant is the name of the new Irish pub set to open at 705 N. 1st Street at the end of next month, reportedly from the same people behind Seamus McCaffrey’s. Can we interpret the unusual name to mean that they’re betting on downtowners racing for a pint?
Tucked into the same building as Sens Asian Tapas and Wade Moises’ Pasta Bar (opening soon), this will make 1st Street and Pierce quite the bustling corner. — Michele Laudig
