After 13 years of pouring craft pints and serving juicy wings, a downtown gastropub is calling it quits. Angel’s Trumpet Ale House will close after service on Friday, according to an announcement on its social media pages.
The ale house’s statement acknowledges “it’s hard to believe.”
“We can’t thank you enough for all the love and support — the friendships, the celebrations and countless memories mean more than words can say,” the statement said.
Angel’s Trumpet has been a staple for beer and bar bites since Sharry and Mat Englehorn opened the restaurant and bar in a 1970s-era block building on the northwest corner of Second and McKinley streets in 2012.
The gastropub has a vast bar with 31 rotating taps, an eclectic menu that includes our favorite nachos, massive fried chicken-like wings, comforting “TV dinners” served in trays and sweet handpies that harken nostalgically to Pop-Tarts. Drinkers could sip pints on the restaurant’s shaded patio or bring their four-legged friends to join them al fresco.
Angel’s Trumpet expanded with a second location in Arcadia in 2018, which closed in 2021.
“Sharing our passion for craft beer and scratch cooking with all of you has been an incredible journey,” the gastropub’s statement said.
Fans reacted to the announcement with shock and disappointment. One user commented simply with a crying face emoji.
“This isn’t real life,” Danicka (Dee) Robinson wrote. “We will miss you so much. We come from Maricopa just for wings and craft beers 🥹 had our first date there, had our engagement party there, and our rehearsal dinner and post wedding dinner 🥹 so many wonderful memories made 🪽🎺”
Many shared their favorite bites at the ale house.
“Best fries and burgers period. Unforgettable wings! Noooo! You guys were the ORIGINAL tap room!” Shift Caffeine posted.
Others were sad to lose their third space.
“Thanks for all the beers, great food, met some amazing people, and created unforgettable memories. Always felt a connection with staff, and regular’s (sic),” Brian Doyle wrote.
The Angel’s Trumpet team thanked its patrons for more than a decade of support and encouraged people to come in this week to raise one more pint.
“We will miss this community and are so grateful for 13 years,” the post said.
