With several Oktoberfest celebrations right around the corner, we thought it only fitting to share our favorite Valley restaurants for German eats like schnitzels, sauerkraut, and sausages — all washed down with a stein-full or two of German ale, of course.
Want the German goodness to go? Pick up freshly made German foods and imported delicacies at the German Sausage Company, Schreiner’s Fine Sausage, Stanley’s Polish Sausage, and Old Heidelberg Bakery (all in Phoenix).
Lederhosen hanging from the ceiling, accordion and tuba players on Fridays and Saturdays, and more dirndl-clad waitresses delivering 32-ounce schooners of dark, German dunkel than you can shake a schnitzel at, this Old Country German restaurant in Glendale is as charming as it is lively. Don’t miss the Jager Schnitzel, a tender breaded pork loin topped with a luscious brown mushroom gravy, smoked pork chops, and crazy-good desserts like strudels and a sauerkraut cake.
Old Town’s new craft beer and artisan sausage hot spot features chef Payton Curry cooking housemade traditional, gourmet, and exotic (rabbit or rattlesnake, anyone?) sausages and bratwursts with signature toppings as well as thrice-cooked Belgian fries and jumbo hand-twisted pretzels. And like any good beer garden worth its suds, there are more than 24 craft beers on tap, including several selections from Germany and Belgium.
This German restaurant in a Mesa strip mall serves platefuls of traditional fare in a setting that hasn’t changed since it opened over 25 years ago. Try the Wurst Peanne for a sampling of stellar sausages, the chicken dish hühnerbrust calbados featuring chicken breast in a cream sauce with apple schnapps, or the classic and filling schweinebraten made with tender roast pork and moist dumplings. Wash it all down with strong German brews on tap.
Around since 1983 in the same Mesa strip mall as Bavarian Point, this cozy spot serving authentic German cuisine is done up in the style of a gasthaus (small inn). Try the spicy zigeuner schnitzel with hot pepper gravy and red cabbage, smoked pork roast, and leberkase with onions, the German version of meatloaf. Along with an interior covered in memorabilia from the Old Country, expect German music, over the speakers or from a live band, and friendly service.
