Here’s something you don’t see every day: free barbecue.

In fact, Joe Johnston and the team behind Joe’s Real BBQ in Gilbert only do it once a year, and it’s coming up next week. On Wednesday, May 3, the restaurant will host its 17th annual Customer Appreciation Day at its location at 301 North Gilbert Road in downtown Gilbert.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and then again from 4 to 7:30 p.m., the restaurant will be serving up sandwiches (your choice of chicken or pulled pork), accompanied by coleslaw, beans, and a drink, all for $0. And, if that wasn’t enough to make you feel good about yourself, Joe’s will also be collecting canned food (fruit, in particular) and boxed cereal for the Open Arms Care Center, a neighboring nonprofit that provides food and clothing to the homeless.

No other menu items will be free on May 3, and you must be present to receive your free meal (no takeout, either). Joe’s will offer little sandwiches for little customers, too. For more information about the restaurant or the food drive, visit joesrealbbq.com and openarmscc.com.
