From High Tea to Fish and Chips, Seven Places to Get a Taste of Britain in Metro Phoenix

In case you don’t remember from last time the Olympics rolled around, watching athletes burn hundreds of calories can really get you thinking…about dinner. And since we’re about to be bombarded with “English this” and “London that,” here are seven places to get a taste of the UK without leaving the Valley of the Sun.

Traditional English fare

Cornish Pasty

The pasty (pass-tee) originated in Cornwall, a region in southwestern England known in the past for its many tin mines. Reminiscent of a potpie, but made to be eaten with the hands, we assure you food doesn’t get more stick-to-your-ribs than this. In addition to the classic “Oggie,” Cornish Pasty in Tempe has more original options like “The Mexican” that would make even the Queen swoon.

British Open Pub

They’re serving classics like Bangers and Mash and “Wallys,” or deep-fried dill pickles at this Scottsdale pub. And though it may be located in a city known more for bro-mance than English fancy pants, the neighborhood bar atmosphere will have you buying pints for the whole place before you know it.

George and Dragon

Okay, so George and Dragon might look a little rough around the edges — but with the Union Jack flying high outside, we have to give them credit for authenticity. They’ve got prize-winning fish n’ chips, a memorable steak and kidney pie and a satisfying selection of imported pints. Because life is better with a beer in it.

Rose and Crown

This pub welcomes you to drop in and say “‘ello” right on their website but it’s the good ol’ fashioned British cheer that keeps us coming back, pint after pint. Anglophiles will love the British-themed décor; pop-style paintings of English icons such as Winston Churchill and James Bond grace the walls at this downtown dive.

A High Tea party

English Rose Tea Room

You’ll definitely want to bring your most dashing English fascinator — you know, one of those funny hats Kate and Pippa wear — to this spot in Carefree. If you’re going for the full experience they offer the ‘Duchess of Bedford’s Formal Afternoon Tea,’ a traditional tea party served on antique bone china.

Anglo-Indian cuisine

Curry Corner

In 2001 former UK Foreign Secretary Robin Cook proclaimed Chicken Tikka Masala “Britan’s true national dish,” which means no culinary representation of English cuisine can be complete without a little curry. The Indo-Pakistani cuisine at curry corner packs a punch that you won’t feel in your wallet.

Something from the pond

Taylor’s Chowder House

Yeah, you could head here for a bowl of New England clam chowder. But for flavors from UK you’ll have to opt for a plate batter-fried goodness: fish n’ chips. Since 1985, Taylor’s been frying their Alaskan coldwater cod in a mixture of tempura and traditional batter. It’s a combo you won’t forget.
