It’s been several weeks since a sign went up in the window of Mamma Mia Original Pizza & Subs located at 3937 East Indian School Road in Phoenix. The handwritten sign states simply that the restaurant is “closed for vacation.”
After weeks of waiting, there’s still no word about when the restaurant will reopen. The restaurant’s answering machine echoes the “closed for vacation” note on the door, and the Mamma Mia website and Facebook page give no indication of when the eatery plans to reopen for business. Phone calls and e-mails have gone unanswered so far.

The family-owned and -operated restaurant has been a staple of the neighborhood since it opened in 2003. Known for its slices of New Jersey-style pizzas, Mamma Mia also serves pasta, both hot and cold subs, calzones, stromboli, wings, and desserts.
Will you step up to support New Times this year?
At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $16,750 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
A second location at 806 East Indian School Road (Eighth Street and Indian School Road in Central Phoenix) closed in 2012. That restaurant opened not long after the original location.
Stayed tuned for more information, which we’ll share when we get it.
