Mint juleps, bourbon infusions and something called a Hot Brown are on the menu tomorrow, Saturday, May 7th at 2 pm at Mabel’s on Main in Scottsdale in honor (of course) of the Kentucky Derby.
Mabel’s has dubbed this the Woodford Derby Party in honor of Woodford Reserve small-batch bourbon, the main ingredient in cocktails served in honor of the world’s most famous horse race. Buy a mint julep in a copper cup for $6, or try a classic Manhattan or Louisville Cooler.
To soak up the booze, Mabel’s will offer up the Hot Brown, an open-faced sandwich created at the Brown Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky, “made with turkey and bacon, topped with mornay sauce and broiled until it browns,” according to the Mabel’s folks. They’ll also be serving fried green tomatoes, fried chicken and something called Hoppin’ John (black-eyed peas, rice and ham hocks).
All you need is a hat — and make it a good one, there will be games including prizes for best hat and best outfit.
Will you step up to support New Times this year?
At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $17,250 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
But please, leave your horse at home.
