Forks up, Phoenix! Chow Bella and Roosevelt Row present the fourth annual Pie Social Saturday, November 16, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the “What Should Go Here” Pop Up Park at Second and Roosevelt streets. We’ve got an all-star lineup of bakers making pies for you to taste, and from now till Pie Social, we’ll introduce them to you, one by one. Today: Marisa Lown of Gertrude’s
Gertrude’s pastry chef Marisa Lown brings cooking knowledge, recipes, and memories from both of her grandmas into the kitchen while she bakes.
“They were classic southern Texas women who wore heels in the kitchen and every meal was an event,” Lown says.
We’re thankful for you. Are you thankful for us?
We feel thankful for our staff and for the privilege of fulfilling our mission to be an unparalleled source of information and insight in Phoenix. We’re aiming to raise $30,000 by December 31, so we can continue covering what matters most to this community.
Help us continue giving back to Phoenix.
However, she leaves her heels at home for her 16-hour workdays.

Lown remembers first baking when she was 4. As she grew up, cooking became a hobby and a side job. Once she tired of her desk job, she decided to make the move to a culinary career.
Now baking at Gertrude’s, she is excited to mingle with the other Phoenix pastry chefs at the Pie Social.
Oh, and don’t be alarmed if you see her right hand bandaged from having wrist surgery. She has practiced baking with one hand, and has become quite an ambidextrous.
