Independent Journalism in Phoenix Needs You

We need to raise $15,000 by August 9 to support the reporting our community depends on. Reader support keeps us independent and is playing a larger role in funding local journalism and shaping what comes next. If you believe independent local journalism matters, make a contribution today.

Things are starting to perk up downtown.

Randall Denton, who managed the Willow House for three years, has a two-month-old coffee roasting business called Xanadu Coffee Co., located behind the former “new” Willow House space on Van Buren (call 480-220-8779 for info). His clients include the Hotel San Carlos, Paisley Violin, and a new spot selling pastries and coffee at the southwest corner of 7th Street and Pierce, 7th Street Cafe.

Meanwhile, Paisley Violin’s Derrick Suarez is working on a new eatery, also in the former “new” Willow House space (1722 W. Van Buren), called Capitol Coffee. He plans to open in a couple weeks for breakfast and lunch, with a menu of pastries, sandwiches, salads, and soups. There will also be live entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays.
