Since Maui Dog, the colorful eatery of wonderfully flavored island-inspired dogs, burgers, and sliders closed late last year, the little standalone building on Indian School Road and 36th Street in East Phoenix has been as vacant as my still-mourning-its-closing heart. (Follow-up note: Maui Dog owner John Stamatakis has since gone into the financial planning world, but is still trying to bring back his hot dog house.)

That is, until a few weeks ago, when I noticed a bit of activity going on inside.

And as early as last weekend, a sign has gone up in the restaurant’s front window with a few details on the new tenant.

Called The Stand, the new independent eatery will serve up burgers and tacos and looks as if it will open sometime in September or October.

Let’s hope The Stand has better luck than Maui Dog and, prior to that, Ricky’s Big Philly, another one of my faves. May they both R.I.P. or, better yet, come back and feed us already.
