Don’t freak out yet, but according to a post on the New Hong Kong Restaurant website, the owners of the well-loved Chinese restaurant are looking to sell. Citing age and a “large amount of traffic in the restaurant,” the owners are searching for someone to buy their business.
Yup. Okay, now you can freak out.
Widely regarded as one of the best Cantonese restaurants in town, New Hong Kong Restaurant owes its success to one man: the restaurant’s chef and owner Jian Yu, who came to Phoenix with his family in 1997. Originally from Kaiping in China’s Guangdong province, Yu worked at various Chinese restaurants around town — earning a fan base among the Valley’s Chinese residents — until eventually taking over Hong Kong Restaurant about a decade ago. He was the one who added the “New” to the name.
Here’s the full post from the restaurant’s website:
Will you step up to support New Times this year?
At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $17,250 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
We personally want to Thank-You for all the support you have given us over the years. From just a small buffet restaurant to the Best of Phoenix Chinese Food! We are so proud of the achievements over the years, but sadly, the time has come. Age has caught on to us, and we cannot handle the large amount of traffic in the restaurant. As the owners of the restaurant, we are looking for someone whom we can pass this legacy onto.
The website also offers a phone number and e-mail interested parties can use to contact the owners.
Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have some mourning to do.
