$10,000

There’s no sign up yet, there’s a limited menu, and there’s still some decorating to be done, but last Thursday, a new independently-owned spot called Hippies Cove took over the space that formerly housed Tacos del Mar in Tempe (414 S. Mill Ave.).

Owner John Newell, who owned Made Rite Diner in Phoenix about a decade ago, emphasizes that the next couple weeks be a soft opening for the hippie/surf-themed restaurant. The menu still features casual Mexican food, and will eventually include hot wings and frozen yogurt as well. There’s also a full bar.

Currently, business hours are 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 9:30 a.m. to 2 a.m., Friday and Saturday. For more info, call 480-736-0321.
