With its eclectic mix of independent retail shops, the stretch of 7th Avenue between Indian School and Camelback known as Melrose on 7th seems a prime location for a cheerful, locally owned restaurant like America’s Taco Shop.
Owners Terry and America Bortin opened their original location in the Coronado District (2041 N. 7th St.) a little over a year ago. Now, they’re about to open a second spot in the Melrose District space that most recently housed Bantu Bistro. Terry Bortin says he plans to open on Monday.
The menu will feature the same popular carne asada that they’re serving at the original location. Bortin adds that besides lunch and dinner, both spots will also be open for breakfast, with Matador coffee and a breakfast burrito made with jack cheese, chorizo, potatoes, roasted tomato salsa, and optional eggs.
Another new menu item is tacos al pastor, made on an authentic Mexican vertical rotisserie.
