With Spice on its way out and pot not yet legal, people might get desperate for a high - but don't reach for that nutmeg just yet. With Spice on its way out and pot not yet legal, people might get desperate for a high — but don’t reach for that nutmeg just yet.

Frontier Natural Products Co-op is voluntarily recalling nutmeg that is potentially contaminated with Salmonella from its Whole Foods Markets and Frontier Bulk stores following a recall from the non-organic nutmeg supplier: Mincing Overseas Spice Company, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA reports: “Consumption of products containing Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.”

Great: Sickness-prone people might die eating Grandma’s pumpkin pie.

The outlook isn’t much better for those of us in decent health…

“Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms) endocarditic and arthritis.”

Yikes! That sounds even more unbearable than the high-hangover-from-hell. Stay away from Frontier Bulk’s 16-oz. Ground Nutmeg with the UPC 0-89836-00165-8 and Lot 0306 as well as Whole Foods 365 1.92-oz. Ground Nutmeg with UPC 0-99482-41931-8 and Lot 0321.
