Happy Cinco de Mayo, Chow Bella readers! Last week, we got your mouth watering with our Salsa Showdown — four different salsa recipes prepared by our contributors, all sampled by yours truly.

They were so good, I made a mini-meal out of them, nibbling back and forth between Claire’s deliciously balanced pico de gallo, Jonathan’s thick, garlicky salsa (his dad’s recipe), Carol’s chipotle mango creation, and Shannon’s hot habanero salsa.

Each one was worthy of several chips’ worth of eating. In the end, though, I had to pick a winner.

It’s absolutely unfair that writer Carol Blonder is a chef, but lucky me! I just loved her combination of ripe mango, tomatoes, onion, garlic, cilantro, and avocado chunks mixed with chopped chipotles. The sweet and smoky flavors made for an excellent salsa that was as good as any I’ve had in this city’s best restaurants.
