Those Smashburger folks are pretty ambitious. Their Arizona presence only dates back to August 2009, with the Tempe shop, and they’ve since added an Avondale location.
Today, number three — in the Colonnade at 1949 E. Camelback Rd. — is open to the public.
In case you haven’t tried one of Smashburgers burgers yet, the restaurant’s name comes from the cooking method, where they smash hamburger patties on a hot grill. Toppings are unusual, too, including potato chips or Maytag blue cheese. One of the local specialties is an “Arizona Smashburger” topped with habanero cheese, guac, chipotle mayo, and jalapenos.
They also serve hot dogs (not so common at national fast food joints), rosemary fries, Haagen Dazs milkshakes, and even beer and wine.
