Tacos Chiwas Broken Into and Burglarized Over the Weekend

Tacos Chiwas, the beloved neighborhood taqueria located just west of the State Route 51 overpass on McDowell Road, was broken into and vandalized over the weekend.

Armando Hernandez, who runs the restaurant with his wife Nadia Holguin, confirmed to New Times that the break-in happened on Sunday morning around 1 a.m., when the restaurant was closed.

The suspect, or suspects, broke a glass door to get into the restaurant. At least $4,000 in cash was stolen, and several lights were damaged.

No one was hurt during the break-in, and no word yet on whether the Phoenix Police Department has any leads on who might be responsible.

If you want to show your support for Tacos Chiwas, Adam Allison, the chef behind the Left Coast Burrito Food Truck and the upcoming farm-to-table Handlebar Diner in east Mesa, created a Facebook page encouraging fans of the taqueria to stop by Tacos Chiwas tomorrow at 6 p.m. to buy tacos and show the restaurant some love. The Facebook page also contains a link to a GoFundMe campaign created to help the restaurant with repairs.

Taco Chiwas celebrated its first-year anniversary earlier this month. Hernandez and Holguin recently debuted a sister concept, Cafe Chiwas, which is located next door and sells tamales, pastries and coffee.
