As far as we know, there’s only one place on the Internet where rapping, feather boas and a bunch of F-bombs intersect with cooking and disco balls. That place is on Coolio’s You Tube Channel “Cookin’ with Coolio.”

The rapper, who you will probably know as “that guy who sang ‘Gangsta’s Paradise,'” has spent several years re-branding himself as The Ghetto Gourmet, a sort of Martha Stewart of the ‘hood. And if you don’t believe it, just watch this video of him making the “Blackanese” — that’s black and Japanese or Chinese — or “Blasian” — that’s black and Asian — dish, The Soul Roll.

The Soul Roll is chef Coolio’s take on the egg roll, except that instead of being filled with fresh veggies and chicken or beef, these are stuffed with ground beef, half a “dime bag” of seasoned salt, onion, garlic and what looks like shredded cheddar cheese.

Will you step up to support New Times this year?

At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $16,750 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.

Wise words, Coolio.

Other Cookin’ With Coolio video tutorials cover how to make Swashbucklin’ Shrimp, Spinach Even Kids will Eat and Coolio Fork Steak. If that doesn’t satisfy your craving for such ghetto gourmet creations as Tricked Out West Side Tilapia, we’ll also call your attention to his book, Cookin’ with Coolio: 5 Star Meals at a 1 Star Price.
