Captain Bills Submarine

A mash-up of a sub shop and a pop culture museum, this fun little neighborhood eatery has been a favorite with Phoenix locals for more than 30 years. From advertising icons to oversize household items to hundreds of nearly-naughty bumper stickers and customer photos covering every square inch of space, the décor accompanies a menu of standard hot and cold subs and salads priced on the cheap. Good bets at Captain Bill's Submarine are the Famous Italian stuffed with ham, genoa, salami, bologna, and provolone, and the New York Beef and Cheese with grilled onions, mushrooms, and bell peppers. Captain Bills may have been "putting the meat between the buns since 1981," but it's the kitsch that makes us crave it.
