Valley post-hardcore/screamo band Greeley Estates is having a CD release party for their third full-length album, Go West Young Man, Let the Evil Go East (Science) on Saturday, June 7. In anticipation of the show, we recently caught up with Greeley Estates guitarist Brandon Hackeson.

How does this record differ from your previous releases? It’s definitely a lot heavier and darker than anything we’ve done before. It still sounds like us, but it’s a whole new direction musically and lyrically. I think this record defines us as a band -- if you want to know what Greeley Estates sounds like, you should listen to this record.

You mentioned the darker lyricism. I read that the lyrics to the lead-off track were inspired by the zombie film 28 Days Later. Yeah, Ryan [Zimmerman, GE’s singer] writes all our lyrics, and he looks a lot to movies for influence. I think that’s why the sound is sort of cinematic.

What’s your favorite Vans Warped Tour memory? We did the whole tour in 2005 and 2006, and this summer is our third time around. On the ’06 Warped Tour, we had an awesome time in Montreal. We were put on the main stage, in front of like, 16,000 people. Not all of them knew who we were, of course, but it was cool to be on the main stage. That stands out for me.

What’s a Greeley Estates show like? It’s just a good time. The kids come out and have fun and get sweaty and gross. The venue gets hot. We’re definitely a live band, and we love putting on an energetic show.

If you could tour with any band -- current or historical -- who would it be? I’d love to go out with some crazy classic band like AC/DC. Or Blink-182 or Green Day. I think every band out there that’s come out in the last several years is influenced by them somehow. Green Day’s Dookie album really influenced me, as far as exposing me to punk rock.

If Greeley Estates was a food dish, what would you taste like? Hmm. Probably French toast. We’d taste like French toast, because we’re sweet.
