Earlier this week, we asked you an extremely important question: what's the best love song of all time? Not only that, but we made the process even more complicated by making you choose from a list of pre-approved songs in line with the whims of Phoenix New Times. (That's to say, we have a mostly narrow view of what constitutes a proper love song for the ages.)

Today, after garnering a rather respectable 42 responses, we have an answer in our grubby little hands:

Al Green’s ‘Let’s Stay Together’

Yes, the R&B classic garnered a healthy 19 percent of the vote, and rightfully so. While the song may be a bit of a cliche at this point, you simply can't deny why it's long been a staple of dances and romantic evenings alike.

Whether it's Green's magnetism and perfectly-tinged vulnerability; the universal appeal of a song that recognizes the up-and-down nature of romance; or the sheer history of humanity attached to the song, "Let's Stay Together" is basically love personified. It's a declaration of imperfect romance in the face of a universe that chews up and spits out such constructs, and hearing it will make you want to fight for love in the face of these flaws or shortcomings. To connect with this song is to be reminded of love's true power: to make us brave when we're not, and to give us joy and peace when those aren't always readily available. It's the song for true lovers, and long may its sentimental vibes echo in our hearts and minds.

As for the rest of the poll, the remainder of the top 10 is as follows:
  • Frankie Valli, "Can’t Take My Eyes Off You" (16.7 percent)
  • Selena, "I Could Fall in Love" (11.9 percent)
  • Foo Fighters, "Everlong" (9.5 percent)
  • Type O Negative, "Love You to Death" (9.5 percent)
  • Bob Dylan, "Lay Lady Lay" (7.1 percent)
  • REM, "At My Most Beautiful" (4.8 percent)
  • Etta James, "Don't Blame Me" (4.8 percent)
  • The Cure, "Lovecats" (4.8 percent)
  • Jeff Buckley, "Lover, You Should've Come Over" (2.4 percent)
The only real disappointment? My own choice for the poll’s dark horse, The Dead Milkmen’s "Punk Rock Girl," garnered a mere 2.4 percent of the vote. Ouch.

Whether you’ve got a boo or you’re flying solo this year, enjoy "Let's Stay Together" below. And if you’d like more polls, romantic or otherwise, let us know. We’re always happy to combine our two greatest loves, polling and music nerdery.
