North Carolina’s Annuals remain a gravity-defying whirlwind with the release of their latest disc, Such Fun. Pairing herky-jerky rhythms and over-the-top musical drama, the players follow the whimsical lead of frontman Adam Baker into robust country, rapturous string sections, and myriad other musical pathways. To wit: “Hot Night Hounds” peaks with a bleary spiral of jam-band guitar, “Hair Don’t Grow” summons bluesy grit via Weezer goofiness, and the end of “Hardwood Floor” sounds like two bands playing at once. Annuals devour decades of music, spitting them back out into a sonic Technicolor smoothie.
