Alex Chilton, singer and guitarist of ’70s rock band Big Star died last night in New Orleans at age 59. The cause of death is suspected to be a heart attack, and Big Star was set to play at this year’s SXSW.
The band is cemented in history as a highly influential with a cult following. While they may not be a household name, they continuously make notable lists of top albums/songs of all time, including Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. They’ve been covered by the likes of The Posies, Wilco, Whiskeytown, and the Valley’s own Gin Blossoms. They’ve also received numerous nods from those in the industry, including R.E.M., and The Replacements who penned the lyrics, I never travel far, without a little Big Star.
The rock world laments his loss.
