Impatient ears will hear the pretty indie gloss of Camera Obscura and quickly dismiss it as twee chamber pop, but while the sextet’s sunny music pleases on contact, front woman Tracyanne Campbell has more on her mind than sweet refrains. While the galloping opener, “Lloyd, I’m Ready to Be Heartbroken,” feels carefree, Campbell’s lyrics deal with the desolation of the love-starved, foolishly negotiating through a bad relationship’s emotional land mines in order to stave off loneliness. Likewise, the chiming guitars on “If Looks Could Kill” in no way prepare you for a verse that begins, “Tell me where it all went wrong,” and grimly concludes, “Maybe you gotta go.” At less than 40 minutes, Let’s Get Out briskly documents heartbreak without being overdramatic, and the band’s juiced-up Byrds-ian melodies are life-affirming even as Campbell’s world collapses. In fact, if you’re not paying attention, you might actually think she’s as happy as she sounds.
