Chance the Rapper’s second studio album, “Star Line,” just dropped, his first since 2019. The artist is using his platform to voice his feelings about ICE and Trump’s continued escalation of immigration raids.
In the track “Drapetomania,” he makes his point clear in the third verse. “Tiffany fein in a blue box/401K in a shoe box/Her favorite rapper named 2Pac/Love 2Pac ‘cause he shot two cops/I got a 9 millimeter called Thug Life/I got a new chain, it say FUCK ICE,” The Migrant Insider reported on August 18.
Despite protests and pleas, ICE raids began in Los Angeles earlier this summer and have ramped up, including President Trump deploying National Guard troops to the city without Gov. Gavin Newsom’s consent.
The raids aren’t exclusive to Los Angeles; they’re happening in cities across the states, creating a collective veil of fear. Beyond worry and fright, reports have been coming in steadily regarding people suffering injuries during these events, including at least one fatality.
Chance isn’t the only musician speaking out against ICE. Ice Cube, Cardi B., Bad Bunny, and Doechii are among the performers who have put Trump’s ICE agenda on blast. Will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas also has a new single. Called “East L.A.,” it includes the lines, “I love Mexicanas from the Border/Make her my wife so ICE won’t deport her.”
Tyler, The Creator posted an Instagram story that said “Fuck ICE,” and played a clip on repeat that chanted the same message.
Green Day frontman Billie Jo Armstrong also used Instagram to make his point. He posted a scene from one of the L.A. protests, adding a middle finger and an ice cube emoji. The song “Fuck You,” from the band’s most recent record, provided the soundtrack.
Tom Morello, whose band Rage Against the Machine has been living up to their name for over three decades, using their funk metal music to challenge social and political inequalities, released an anti-ICE song called "Pretend You Remember Me." In a press statement, he dedicated it to "all the families torn apart by the recent immigration purges and kidnappings ... and for those who are finding the courage to stand up against racism, tyranny and injustice."
