DeVotchKa is Russian for “girl.” Not sure what that has to do with anything, but I like when foreign words are so much longer than their English counterpart. DeVotchKa is also the name of a crazy-ass band from Denver that sounds like Fiddler on the Roof if many, many more drugs were involved. If you are like me, you may have thought you’d never heard of them until a couple of months ago. And unless you are a liar, you probably hadn’t. You probably have heard them, though; you just didn’t know it. They have had their fingers in a bakery’s worth of pies over the past decade. They started out as the backing band for burlesque shows, moved on to touring with Marilyn Manson’s former flame Dita von Teese, and even made most of the soundtrack for Little Miss Sunshine. You know that part when Paul Dano freaks out and his voice cracks a lot? Well, actually, there wasn’t any music during that part. But they are in there a bunch of other times, I swear. I for one can’t wait for their show at The Marquee. I have never seen them perform live, but if YouYube videos are any indication (and they certainly are) it should be a nonstop freak-out fest not to be missed.
