Turns out that not everything stays in Vegas after all. To wit: DJ Larry Mac, who ditched the PHX in 2005 for a radio gig in Sin City but pulled a prodigal son. He recently returned to the city where he made a name for himself running legendary (and now-defunct) AM alternative station KUKQ in the mid-’90s, as well as spinning indie and alt-rock on KUPD and at Valley clubs like Anderson’s Fifth Estate. You can now find the 42-year-old platterman working weekends on 103.9 KEDJ, in addition to resuming his Tuesday night slot at Anderson’s, 6820 East Fifth Avenue in Scottsdale, and his newest night at The Sets, 93 East Southern Avenue in Tempe, on Wednesdays. At both clubs, Mac promises to drop the same mix of rock and alternative cuts — both classic and current. “I’m trying to set a cool vibe, playing a mixture of everything, rock and alternative, where people can hear some really cool new stuff, rarities, and also the songs they know,” he says. He also may whip out a few alt-rock mash-ups, such as Primus’ “Blue Collar Tweakers” versus Golden Earring’s “Radar Love.” Doors open at 9 p.m. at Anderson’s (with no cover), and 8 p.m. at The Sets (with free admission for ladies and a $3 cover for guys).
