Jean Grae comes across as the kind of lyricist you don’t want to mess with. “You Don’t Like It (So What),” from her forthcoming album, Cake or Death, states it plainly: “I’m like Judy Bloom with uzis.” You wouldn’t expect DJ LES735 (a.k.a. Luis Sias), who will be spinning at Ms. Grae’s Red Owl performance this weekend, to bring it any less. True to form, his mixes are no-nonsense and minimal, with menacing synth lines underscoring LES735’s impressive scratching. He’s not afraid to get sensitive, either. Check out his production of Mykr Fiendx’s version of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On.” It’s smooth but tough, too, the kind of thing that should complement Jean Grae’s steez. The beats drop Friday, August 26, at Red Owl, 2155 East University Drive in Tempe. Doors at 9 p.m. Admission is $12.
