It’s said that competitors are truly at their best when fighting with their closest rivals for the ultimate prize. Even the great Bob Marley knew this to be true when he sung “The hotter the battle / The sweeter the victory.” This weekend, the competition is guaranteed to be white hot at Civic Space Park, 424 North Central Avenue, as Arizona’s best and brightest turntablists duke it out for one of sweetest prizes around: a shot at the DMC World DJ Championships. Local mixmasters will gather in the great outdoors on Saturday, April 21, to compete in the DMC’s Phoenix Regional DJ Battle and engage in two-minute sessions that are likely to include plenty of scratching, remixing, and other artistry. A half-dozen contenders will move on to the U.S. finals in August at NYC’s (Le) Poisson Rouge and vie for shot at the DMC world championships this fall in London and the vaunted golden Technics turntable that’s awarded to the ultimate winner. The local battles begins at 6 p.m. Admission is free. Visit www.dmcdjchamps.com to participate.
