Here’s an interesting story, as told by D.O.A. front man Joey Keithley in his autobiography, I, Shithead: A Life in Punk: Back in 1987, the band was opening for David Lee Roth (yes, really). After D.O.A. almost got booed off the stage, Roth’s road manager kicked the entire band out of the coliseum. How punk rock is that? And after 25 years, 13 albums, 212,000 beers, nine riots, 27 busts (and a partridge in a pear tree), D.O.A. is still covering the globe, while Roth is covering his head with hair transplants. The band just released a new album, Live Free or Die, and it doesn’t look as if the members plan on retiring any time soon. “I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished,” writes Keithley. “We had a blast. We still are.” If you consider yourself a punk, but you’ve never seen D.O.A., get to this show and get correct. Otherwise, you’re just a poseur.
