The dissolution of Squeeze opened a new musical world for Glenn Tilbrook. Suddenly a solo artist, without a label, touring alone with nothing more than an acoustic guitar, Tilbrook hit the road as hard as at any time in his career, first plunging into covers, then supporting a solo debut, The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook. The album follows the Squeeze blueprint of classic pop in warm, soulful arrangements with an easy melodicism. Touring with these richly orchestrated numbers alone requires they be scaled back to the basics, which, as with the Squeeze tunes that dot Tilbrook’s set, brings out not only his wonderful playing and vocals, but also an intimacy that enriches classics such as “Tempted.” Tilbrook is a garrulous and amusing performer, and his shows are spontaneous affairs that can go just about anywhere — even into the parking lot.
