Believe it or not, there are a handful of excellent indie record labels in the great state of Arizona, boasting rosters with some of our finest local artists and some hot underground national acts, as well. This week, we’d like to give a shout-out to one of our oldest hip-hop labels, 5Fith Coast Records.
5Fith Coast Records (Phoenix)
Founded in 1991
Roster includes:
Roca Dolla (Phoenix)
Tray Gutter (Birmingham, AL)
Tha Formula (Phoenix)
Zig Zag (Phoenix)
Bookie (Phoenix)
Why they’re hot:
Label founder Roca Dolla, formerly known as I-Roq, has been making hip-hop for more than two decades and has worked with artists from G-Unit (Young Buck, Sha Money XL), Wu-Tang Clan (G-Cain), and Aftermath (Che Vicious).
Zig Zag is also a member of the Valley’s oldest and most successful Latino hip-hop group, NB Ridaz.
Tha Formula swept the audience votes for “Best Hip-Hop Act” at the 2007 New Times Summer of Sound series, at a show where the competition included locals Antedote, The Insects, and Intrinzik.
