Ever wondered where Melodic Power Metal came from or which bands actually play that kind of metal? How about the origins of Crossover Thrash, Grindcore or Speed Metal?
Graphic designer Patrick Galbraith and metal historian Nick Grant’s Map of Metal has all of that covered. The interactive map plots out just how there came to be numerous sub-genres of Heavy Metal complete with plenty of song examples. The artists featured range from Black Sabbath, Queen, Slayer, Lamb of God and Cannibal Corpse. As well, the map shows how different genres of music not usually associated with metal — Punk Rock, Grunge and Post Rock — have ties to the genre.
The Map of Metal follows a progression through the decades, dating back to the 1970s and continuing to the present day. It also shows the different countries involved in the making of metal — England, Sweden, Japan and the United States. While some genres of metal often sound ridiculous to the point of being made-up (ahem, Blackened crust), the Map of Metal more than proves that those genres are, in fact, real — hell, it even offers some song examples to further prove their point.
