The plight of too many talented songwriters is obscurity, often because they write songs for others. When a song becomes famous, few know the person behind the music. Thankfully, Mark Knopfler, the Scottish-born singer, songwriter, and former lead guitarist for Dire Straits, did not fall into obscurity. Since his Dire days, he has gone on to writes scores for notable films (including The Princess Bride) and made a successful solo career. He was named the 27th-greatest guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone, has won three Grammys since the mid-’80s, and even had a species of dinosaur named after him. Masiakasaurus knopfleri. Not too many rock stars can boast that.
