Conjuring up a cool-sounding name for your record-spinning gig ain’t the easiest thing. It’s gotta be catchy and clever enough to draw in the hipsters, without seeming too hokey. Such is the struggle for Fatigo vocalist/guitarist Mike Montoya and Shizz scenester DJ mig50, who’ve yet to create a moniker for their Tuesday engagement at the Ruby Room Lounge, 717 South Central Avenue. “We fucking need a name. We’ve been talking about it, but got nothing yet,” mig50 says. “We’re not opposed to calling it ‘Midnight Raffle,’ since that’s what we do.” Indeed, when the witching hour comes around during their weekly shift on the turntables, the pair hands out some bizarre giveaways to patrons, including sport coats, bobbleheads, and records. They’re also doling out some awesomely eclectic musical selections, as mig50 spins his collection of ’80s tracks by artists like Spandau Ballet or Billy Ocean and synth-heavy acts like Chromelodeon. Montoya, on the other hand, favors a mix of vintage Latin bands, loungy stuff, bossa nova, indie, and ’80s. “I can go from Tijuana Brass and Sergio Mendes to Depeche Mode,” he says. “It’s all cool to contrast.” The sounds start at 9:30 p.m. with no cover.
