In this week's issue of Phoenix New Times, local electro pop band Peachcake catches the Valley up on what they've been up to the past year and how they've matured since they came together. Recently, the International Peace Bureau made the song "Were We Ever Really Right?", off their upcoming sophomore album, Unbelievable Souls, the official song for The Global Day of Action on Military Spending.
Pruett says:
"This song underwent so many revisions, it's ridiculous. But that was a bi-product of the fact that upon its initial creation and demoing it, we knew we had something tremendously special to us. We had a bonafide, viable hit; a hit like we had never made/heard/seen/had before, and that's how we approached it and treated it.
I remember constantly saying and insisting, 'We need to make sure we do this one right and team up with the right people to bring it to its full potential.' The funny thing is, we never set out nor had any intention to try and make this song into the single/hit or single-worthy material...it just sort of happened in that strange, unexpected, majestic way these things can work out sometimes.
I think being that it is more of that 'hit' type of song and plays to a more commercial sound, it may come off a bit more vague and bleak in the lyrical content. However, this song has several hidden meanings, and none of those have to do with a romantic relationship, or the woe of love lost in the context of a romantic relationship. It's actually one of the more personal songs for me and on the album, and touches on something deeper. The song is about my brother Alex, who passed away 4 years ago. We grew up in the small town of Carefree together and always had big desires and dreams to leave, feeling trapped, confined, by that typified angst felt toward a town that seems coercive in its limitations. So this isn't a love song about that typical relationship scenario...instead, this is a love song about my brother, and no matter what things he did to piss me off or what choices he made that seemed treacherous and scathing, I will always love him and appreciate him, and I hope wherever he may be he can hear that.
Furthermore, it's about the push and pull of love and disdain in relation to the aforementioned small-town complex. You may feel trapped and confined, but when you finally emerge out of it and go to the places and areas of life you've always dreamed, you will always love the place you grew up somewhere inside, as it holds a special place no matter how hard wanted to get away from it, and hide. And that is something you should always know."
You Matter
I've been waiting for your voice to get me out of this town
And I've been walking, walking backwards, not knowing what it's about...
Yeah!
But you're a goddess, illuminating my senses a million times now
Just take a look at the bigger white board in the castle of hell...
She said!
Takin' a look at how far you've come, how far we've come, how far we've gone
Take a look at how far we've come, how far...how far we've come!
You should always know
I will always love you
Even if you follow
Follow all those hollow
Well I will love you anyway
And I will know you anyway
And I will love you anyway
But you weren't right and I wasn't wrong when we said this is what it's about
I've got to do something, something new to change my world around...
And it feels like it's all closing in and I'll never know what it means to fend
For livin' a life that's a means to an end, I just know I need to leave it all to mend...
Takin' a look at how far you've come, how far we've come, how far we've gone
Take a look at how far we've come, how far...how far we've come!
No matter what's gone, know I've been all in
No matter what's gone, know I've been all in
No matter what's gone, know I've been all in
And when we sing it I want you to hear it loud!
I want you to hear it loud
I want you to hear it loud
I want you to hear it loud
I want you to hear it loud!
You should always know, I will always love you...
You should always know, I will always love you
You should always know, I will always love you
You should always know, I will always love you
Even if you follow
Follow all those hollow
Well I will love you anyway
And I will know you anyway
And I will love you anyway!
No matter where you are, no matter where you go
No matter where you are, no matter when you go
No matter where you are, no matter where you go
No matter where you are, no matter where you go
No matter where you are, no matter where you go
No matter where you are, no matter where you go
No matter where you are, no matter where you go
No matter where you are, I will always love you...
