Phoenix Fires It Up, Yo

A couple of years ago, my friends and I attempted to start a Dilettante Society, where each week one of us would pick an activity of topics we had some talent in or some knowledge about and teach the other members of the group. It never took off because, well, we were lazy. Thankfully, the organizers of tomorrow night's Ignite Phoenix at the Tempe Center for the Performing Arts had a similar idea and actually got off their asses to do something about it.

The idea is for 18 presenters from all over the Valley to spend 5 minutes (and 20 PowerPoint slides) giving a presentation on a topic they are passionate about. Presentation titles include "Slicing Brains Very Quickly," "The Art of Enjoying Food," and "20 Answers to 20 Unanswerable Questions." It sounds like a smorgasboard of cool-sounding topics, and if, like us, you're a little ADD, you only have to wait five minutes and a new presentation will start. After the (let's admit it) creative stagnation caused by watching events like the Super Bowl, the Oscars and American Idol, this event sounds like the perfect fix to get the creative juices flowing again, no? Ignite is free, but RSVPing is recommended.

KEEP PHOENIX NEW TIMES FREE... Since we started Phoenix New Times, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Phoenix, and we'd like to keep it that way. With local media under siege, it's more important than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" program, allowing us to keep offering readers access to our incisive coverage of local news, food and culture with no paywalls.
