Fountain Hills is steeped in its fair share of history. The northeast Valley suburb boasts ancient petroglyphs carved by the Yavapai people, the historic Dixie Mine and — of course — its iconic namesake fountain, which was built back in 1970.

It's a suitable backdrop for this year’s retro-themed Fountain Hills Music Fest slated for Saturday, April 5. The festival — dubbed “Rock Through Time” — will feature four bands, each performing vintage tunes from a particular era.

The free annual event was originally launched in 2016. This year's edition runs from 4 to 9 p.m. at Fountain Park (12925 N. Saguaro Blvd. in Fountain Hills), and will also offer food trucks and a beer and wine garden with selections from Bone Haus Brewing and Grapeables Wine Bar.

Here’s a rundown of the bands playing at this year’s Fountain Hills Music Fest.

The festival will kick off at 4 p.m. with music from Mick Adams and the Shagwells, the five-member Arizona band paying tribute to the rock bands of the swinging ‘60s and early ‘70s.

Expect to hear the hits of legendary British Invasion acts like The Yardbirds, The Kinks, The Dave Clark Five and The Rolling Stones, as well as comparable American groups of the same era. Adams even bears an uncanny resemblance to Mick Jagger, and drummer Tommy Dears dresses up as Austin Powers during shows, both of which add to the throwback vibes of their performance.

Local band Tripwire will play high-energy covers from late ‘70s rock and pop favorites like Queen, Styx, Foreigner and The Cars from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. They’ll be followed by SRB Southern Rock Band, who live up to their name by performing the twangy tunes of Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers, ZZ Top and other famed acts from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m.

Cover band Iconic will wrap things up from 8 to 9 p.m. with a selection of ‘80s crowd-pleasers, including the songs of Journey and Bon Jovi. Dears, who also plays drums in Iconic, says their set will serve up covers from a who’s who of bands from the era.

“We’re going to go from New Wave to rock to pop to metal,” Dears says. “It’s going to cover a lot of ground from throughout the decade.”
