Here’s a no-brainer: The radio situation here in the PHX sucks a fat one. Between annoying adverts for overpriced car stereos and overplayed earworms like “Hey There Delilah,” we’d rather spend our drive time listening to static instead of another insipid 20-minute mix. If only those wastes of airtime had a play list that’s half as boss as the superfly slate of vintage tunes spun every other Wednesday at the Ruby Room Lounge, 717 South Central Avenue, during ((STEREO)). A collaboration of DJs Legacy, Gabo, and Cypriano Rizla, the bi-weekly affair sees the trio spinning a combination of ’70s-era funk and reggae, as well as ’60s soul jams. They’re also occasionally joined by guests DJ Molotrash (who totes out mod sounds and pop) and Soul Sister #1 (who rocks Tamla/Motown vibes). And near the end of the evening, Cypriano and Legacy conduct a P.A. session where the pair synthesize some serious dub beats, with the occasional freestyler working the mic. The party stars at 9 p.m. and there’s no cover. Visit www.myspace.com/stereo85014.
