The combination of live music and live art performances have become as much a part of the city of Tempe as the college campus and man-made lake that inhabit it. What better way to celebrate the thriving scene than with a two-day festival showcasing some of the Valley's best acts?
Anchored by the artwork of Deon "The Painter" Doughty, The Tempe Rock Star Gold Festival starts tonight at 6 p.m. at the Sail Inn and continues tomorrow, September 29. Page the Village Idiot, Quick Henry, Banana Gun, Snake! Snake! Snakes!, Future Loves Past and Japhy's Descent are among the musicians performing this weekend.
Doughty will be on hand to capture the most memorable moments from the acts and do his best to turn them into iconic masterpieces.
"My artistic process starts with taking a photo of the artist at the most climactic moments of their performance," Doughty explains on his website. "I take many photos of my favorite singers and bands, and then I select the picture that visually represents, and personifies the ultimate aspects of the artist's character and music. I then take the picture into the digital realm, cropping it, performing color correction, and getting the image ready to transfer to canvas. The 18 x 24 canvas is sprayed with metallic gold.
"Using the photo as a guide, I draw it on the canvas with a pencil ... when the band begins I start the process of capturing the vibrations between the artists and audience in rhythmic brush strokes of beautiful blue using negative space to paint the artist in gold," he says.
And that explains the festival's name.
